Curatorial agency Hotel Particulier is pleased to announce the first presentation of _ HOME UNIMPROV, a new series exploring the performative home beyond the notions of function, comfort, and esthetic, as well as the influence that architecture and de- sign have on the social constructs of our society. The first presentation will feature the work of dancer-turned-designer John Sorensen-Jolink who is the founder and designer of the design studio Coil + Drift and will take place during NYCxDESIGN.

_ HOME UNIMPROV will feature Unconscious Forms, Sorensen-Jolink’s new three-channel video installation exploring the body and its interaction with its designed environment through three sequences of choreographic dialogues, where the lines are blurred between human and non-human forms, subject and object, creator and resource. The video work was made in collaboration with photographer/videographer Charlie Schuck and features performers Marla Phalen and Stephen Xue with choregraphy, set and object design by Sorensen-Jolink. Alongside Unconscious forms, a collection of short digital editions is to be released exclusively on Sedition starting May 16th, 2018.

As part of _ HOME UNIMPROV, Hotel Particulier will present an exclusive series of 3 performative chair limited editions based on the original Soren chair by John Sorensen-Jolink for COIL + DRIFT. For these editions, Sorensen-Jolink reimagined the Soren’s shape, focusing on scale of the chair’s minimal arc-shaped back rest using the choreographic principle of negative space. The entire series will be on view at _ HOME UNIMPROV and will be activated by an art performance during the opening reception on May 16.

John Sorensen-Jolink studied dance at the conservatory at New York University’s Tisch School (BFA, summa cum laude). He has worked extensively as a contemporary dancer and choreographer and has performed all over the world with choreo- graphers and directors such as Robert Wilson, Lucinda Childs, and Twyla Tharp before beginning his self-taught design practice five years ago. In 2014 Sorensen-Jolink founded Coil + Drift, a design studio that creates luxurious American-made furniture and lighting using brass, marble, resin, and wood using Sorensen-Jolink’s unique spacial awareness of a dancer and choreographer. Coil + Drift was the recipient of the coveted ICFF Editors’ Award for Best New Designer in 2016.

Hotel Particulier is a curatorial agency generating projects through conceptual series, where emerging and established artists are invited to collaborate with specific and unique works across the contexts of art, fashion, design, experimental film, performance and sound. Under the artistic and curatorial direction of Frederique Thiollet, the series are conceived as a testing ground to explore new undefined and transitive formats from the traditional modes of exhibition and commerce exposure _ reiterated in different locations with different contributors.
